Political intrigue is common in the U.S. as the run-up to the next presidential election continues, but this is one kind of drama no one was expecting.
A man claiming to have a bomb entered the Rochester, New Hampshire headquarters of Democratic hopeful and former First Lady Hillary Clinton Friday and took as many as four people hostage.
All have since been released and heavily armed police waited six hours for the man to come out. He’d been demanding to speak to Clinton, who was out of the state.
Police sent in special units, evacuated the area and locked down a nearby school as a precaution.
One woman, carrying an infant, was spotted rushing out of the building, claiming the man inside had allowed her to leave. She was crying as she talked to a witness. “She said, ‘You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape,”‘ Lettie Tzizik told a local TV station.
Those being held were said to be volunteers.
Around dinner time, the standoff finally ended, as the suspect emerged and was taken down by authorities.
The man, who had an apparent explosive device strapped to his chest, had allegedly been drinking for several hours and witnesses described him as seeming to be “deranged.” His motive still isn’t clear.
