GO Transit Bus Drivers Set Tentative Strike Date

GO Transit bus drivers and ticket takers have set January 7 as a tentative strike date.

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1587 executive met Saturday to talk about the possible strike, which would likely mean an unhappy New Year for the transit system’s more than 30,000 daily riders. The union said it’s releasing the information in advance so that passengers aren’t stranded should the fleet of 300 buses wind up parked indefinitely.

The strike date comes after almost 70 per cent of union members voted to reject the latest offer from GO Transit on Dec. 18.

Along with the drivers and ticket agents, office workers and maintenance electricians are affected. GO Train personnel are in a different union. There would be about 1,200 striking workers in all.

Key issues in the dispute include wages, pension benefits and a new job evaluation process.
