It’s only natural that one of the most significant voices in Canadian music would receive one of its most stirring tribute shows.
And that’s exactly what the late Jeff Healey received Saturday night, when family friends and fans gathered at Toronto’s Sound Academy to honour the local legend and raise money for the Healey Family Trust and Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund.
“I’d crawl up here to be here for this,” said blues guitarist Matt Minglewood.
The killer lineup included Healey’s former band Jazz Wizards, former Cream member Jack Bruce and Deep Purple‘s Ian Gillan. The show followed a format that was used during a 2007 fundraiser, hosted by Healey himself before he passed this year after a long battle with cancer.
“When Jeff passed at the beginning of Marc I think the first thing a lot of us … thought about was, ‘let’s celebrate this guy in a way he would have liked,'” said Ricard Flohil, a longtime friend of Healey’s and the organizer of Saturday’s show. “Nobody on this bill … is getting a penny.”
And Saturday was just the first of two weekend tribute shows. The second is set for Sunday night at Jeff Healey’s former ” Roadhouse” club on Blue Jays Way.
