Devon Wynter, pictured, was killed early Saturday morning in an unlikely location: a church hall.
Four days later, police believe they know who they’re looking for – they just need a name.
The Disciples Revival Church had rented out their facility at 50 Gordon MacKay to an unrelated group for a party. A fight broke out, and Wynter and another man were shot.
At a press conference Wednesday, Det Sgt Gary Grinton explained that the crowd at the dance was older, working professionals; accountants and lawyers among them.
This leads him to believe that the shooting wasn’t gang-related.
“We have to be open to that,” he allowed, “but I don’t believe so.
“This investigation has been rewarding in the way that we have had very good cooperation from people in the banquet hall. We have a number of people that can identify the person and are more than willing to identify the person responsible for this shooting,” Grinton expounded.
But though he has a fairly good description, that’s not enough: “What we need is a name,” he stated.
The most distinctive marker is a tattoo on the alleged shooter’s neck: it’s either letters or numbers; not a picture or a symbol.
And he has a warning for him: “We’re one phone call away from identifying you and catching you and arresting you.”
He urged the suspect to turn himself in with a lawyer.
Wynter, the victim, is known to police but only for a “very minor property offence,” Grinton explained.
“This man has never raised his hand to anybody. The reason he got that nickname [Yogi] is he was like a big huggable teddy bear, so this is not a violent man.”
The suspect is described as
- Male,
- Black,
- Light complexion
- 5’7″-5’10”
- Dreadlocks, or plaits,
- Wearing a beige workwear outfit, often referred to as a ‘Dickie’ suit, but it may not have been that name brand
- Tattoo on his neck.
He’s considered armed and dangerous.
