Weekend To End Breast Cancer ‘Walks’ Off

How did you spend your Saturday?

For thousands of breast cancer survivors and supporters, they gave up their time off to walk 30 kilometres – and they’ll do it again Sunday, all to raise money for the Campbell Family Institute at Princess Margaret Hospital.

The Weekend To End Breast Cancer is an annual event with a self-explanatory goal: all funds accumulated go towards the fight against the deadly disease, whether it’s research or treatment.

Billed as “60km that can change the world,” the route takes participants all over downtown Toronto on September 6 and 7. And each walker had reasons of their own to get involved.

“It’s in honour – in memory of my mother in law who passed away in 2005 from breast cancer. It’s to honour my mother who’s now a two year survivor. I’ve lost far too many friends to breast cancer,” said Chad Cieslik.

Others sensed the urgency in the cause. “It’s important because we’ve got to find a cure for this, and I figured this is the time for me to get involved,” explained Bill Wall, who was sporting a pink wig.

It all began at Exhibition Place, and it will end there too, but in between, particpants will trek all the way out to Downsview Park. Awaiting them are not-quite-luxury accomodations: they’ll have to make do with tents. But entertainment, a hot meal and a hot shower are promised. There’s even a masseuse to take care of end-of-walk woes.

The campers will then set out to walk back downtown on Sunday.
