Forensic Expert Talks Bullets, Blood And Purses At Jane Creba Murder Trial

On TV, CSI is an exciting drama.

In real life, it’s not quite as fast paced.

But it was no less interesting, as a forensic expert took the stand at the trial of a young offender charged in the murder of Jane Creba Wednesday. The 15-year-old was gunned down after a dispute between two groups on Yonge St. on December 26th, 2005.

Toronto Police Det. John Davidson told the jury he recovered several shell casings at the scene that night and located what he described as a “pinkish pool of blood.’ Also found at the spot where the Grade 10 student lay mortally wounded: a blue purse. (pictured below)

Crown prosecutor Kerry Hughes told the panel in her opening statement that Creba was holding her sister’s handbag when the shots rang out. Evidence presented for the first time on Tuesday showed the victim may have known she was in grave danger.

It’s reported Creba was crouching down, apparently to avoid the shots, when the fatal bullets hit. Despite the immediate presence of a doctor who happened to be nearby and the intervention of paramedics, the young girl succumbed to her injuries.

The Crown suggests several of the bullets found on the street came from the gun the accused allegedly had with him when he was arrested.

Davidson told the court that he found 41 bullet fragments at the scene along with 8 shell casings.

Jurors heard three guns were fired as rival groups shot at each other, but there could have been as many as five. Prosecutors alleged a .9-millimetre Ruger was taken from the now 20-year-old, who was arrested at Castle Frank subway shortly after the shooting. Because he was underage at the time of the incident, he’s considered a young offender and can only be identified by the initials “J.S.R.”

He’s facing one count of second-degree murder, six more of attempted murder and five weapons offences.
