It was quite a scary few minutes for crews at a North York waste transfer station on Wednesday – and they spread the fear to emergency workers around the city.
It started around 1:30pm when a worker found a rocket propelled grenade at or near one of the dumpsters at 35 Vanley Crescent, not far from Chesswood and Sheppard Aves.
That report was enough to bring out the ETF, the Bomb Squad and paramedics, and a 300 foot perimeter was established as those nearby were evacuated.
It didn’t take the experts long to make their decision. They determined that the object was, in fact, a grenade but that it was harmless and posed no danger to anyone.
Police aren’t sure where it came from but suspect since it was found at a garbage facility someone may have just thrown it out and its sinister appearance raised an understandable if ultimately unnecessary alarm.
The units quickly cleared and life returned to normal in the area.
