Enrollment Open At First Africentric Alternative School

Enrollment is now open for Canada ‘s first Africentric s chool .

That’s great news to some, while others remain skeptical about the concept.

Both sides of the debate had the chance to voice their opinions on Tuesday night at the first of three informative meetings on the alternative school.

“The 40 percent drop out rate shows there is a problem and this is hopefully the first step in correcting that. I don’t want my children to be that 40%,” said parent Mary Ann Scott.

“It’s a part of their identity, it’s a part of their heritage,” adds Maria Williams.

The school will open this fall in what used to be Sheppard Public School, near Downsview Park.

“It’s wrong for a society because it divides students by race, by artificial division,” argued Board Trustee Josh Matlow.  “What I prefer to see is a curriculum that reflects the diversity of our city for all students in every school.”

The TDSB has already been passing out pre-registration forms. Any student in Toronto between JK – grade 5 is welcome to attend.

The early registration due date is Friday, January 9th.
