We don’t know yet whether The Dark Knight will be nominated for Oscars, but it certainly wasn’t hurting for accolades at Wednesday night’s People’s Choice Awards.
The acclaimed follow-up to Batman Begins swept all five categories it was nominated for, including favourite cast, superhero, action movie, and on-screen match-up for Batman, played by Christian Bale, and The Joker, played by the late Heath Ledger.
“On behalf of all of the cast from the movie, thank you very much to the fans,” Bale said in accepting the award. “Here’s to Heath.”
Hosted by Queen Latifah, other winners at the ceremony included Adam Sandler, Kate Hudson, Robin Williams, Hugh Laurie and Reese Witherspoon.
“It’s such a great way to start the new year,” Witherspoon, who jokingly compared her comedic performance in this year’s Four Christmases to the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line, which won her an Oscar in 2005.
“A couple years ago, I won a great award for singing in a movie. This year, I won an award for having a baby throw up on me.”
Winners are determined by the fans via Internet voting. Both members of Brangelina won statues – Brad Pitt was dubbed favourite leading man, while Angelina Jolie won as favourite female action star.
Ellen DeGeneres received the nod for favourite talk show host.
“I wish I could share this with you,” DeGeneres told the audience while clutching her trophy on stage.
“I could throw it on the ground and smash it into a million pieces, and give each one of you a little piece of it, but that’s violent, and that’s probably why you voted for me, because I’m not violent.”
