The Super 7 Lottery isn’t going to be quite so super anymore. The Canada-wide lottery draw that has given away millions of dollars in prize money is being retired and replaced in the fall. It’s been drawn every Friday night for the past 15 years.
The Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which administers five regional lottery entities, has decided to retire the game on September 18th. What happens to the money after that? According to the OLG, if no one wins the final draw, “it will roll down and be shared among the winners in the next prize category.”
Which may mean that’s a good time to play the game.
Officials have yet to say what will replace it beyond promising a contest that pays out the usual mega-millions. The Super 7 was always the poor cousin to Lotto 6/49, which has generally had higher payouts – although perhaps “poor” is in the eye of the winning ticket holder.
The highest payout in Super 7 history came in May 2002, when four people shared a jackpot worth $37.8 million. By comparison, the one for this coming Friday is just $12 million.
Those who hold subscriptions to the game will get a notice in the mail about how to proceeed.
Details on the replacement game will be released in the next few months.
