Police hope someone may have seen a wrong way crash on Highway 115 Tuesday morning that landed four people in hospital and left a Newcastle Ontario man facing nine drunk driving-related charges.
A Jeep heading south in the highway’s northbound lanes slammed into a van near the eastbound ramp to Highway 401 just before 3am near Bowmanville.
The head-on collision sent one person to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in critical condition, while the three others, who are expected to make full recoveries, were taken to hospitals closer to the crash scene.
The Jeep’s driver, 39-year-old Peter Jason Firing, was charged with four counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, four counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, and one count of operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08.
Even though the accident was horrific, investigating officers say it could have been worse.
“The front ends of both vehicles were just demolished,” noted Sgt. Dave Woodford. “If he hadn’t have hit this vehicle…probably another second or two he would have been on the 401, and we know the traffic on the 401…a lot of trucks.”
