JCVD CityNews.ca Pick of the Week – This could be Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best film and surprisingly enough he’s playing himself (the title is his initials in case you missed it). The film was a hit when it played at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival (during the Midnight Madness programme) and proves that Van Damme can be a decent actor underneath all those muscles. Hopefully we’ll see him do more work along these lines in the future. Special features include the theatrical, French and English versions of the film, deleted scenes and a free digital copy. Also available on Blu-ray. Best bet for renting it in Toronto is Eyesore Cinema or The Film Buff.
Bride Wars – Two best friends want to get married at the same venue and can’t. Only logical thing to do is turn on each other and do horrible, mean things. The most pointless film I’ve ever seen. I’d like to see Kate Hudson stop making movies after this mess. Her acting is horrible and she looks about 10 years older than she actually is. I also feel embarrassed for Anne Hathaway doing this rubbish after her great performance in Rachel Getting Married (get a new agent Anne). Special features include three deleted scenes and a featurette. Also available on Blu-ray.
In the Night Garden: Welcome to the Garden – If you have young children and haven’t seen every episode of the bizarrely wonderful show In The Night Garden then this DVD collection (which includes four 28 minute episodes) is a great start. The show is beautifully shot and I’m glad to see the DVD is presented in a 16×9 anamorphic aspect ratio (impressive for a kids show). Also included on the disc is an introduction to the show for parents, downloadable story and colouring pages and a special nap time mode.
More new releases this week: The Reader (Blu-ray), The Da Vinci Code (Blu-ray), The Pianist (Blu-ray), Martyrs, Nothing But The Truth
