Traffic woes both planned and unexpected have left GTA drivers stymied this weekend.
A serious crash shut down the QEW in Mississauga for several hours Saturday afternoon. The Toronto-bound lanes of the busy route were closed from Winston Churchill Blvd to Erin Mills Pkwy. after a single-vehicle rollover.
It happened around 11am. Police allege that the driver of a Honda Civic lost control of the vehicle. It veered, striking the guardrail before travelling across all three eastbound lanes. The vehicle ended up on its side against a hydro pole.
The driver, a 30-year-old woman, was transported to Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga with serious injuries but in stable condition. The passenger, a 31-year-old man, was taken by air ambulance to Hamilton General Hospital again with serious injuries but in stable condition.
Meanwhile, motorists in the downtown core will soon be coping with the partial closure of the Gardiner Expressway.
Spring maintenance will shut down the eastbound side of the normally packed from Lake Shore Blvd. to Carlaw Ave. starting at 11pm Saturday night. It’s expected to reopen by 11am on Sunday.
Crews will take the night to perform the usual spring rituals of repaving, fixing light standards, repairing guard rails, adjusting cameras and cleaning out winter’s leftovers.
You can use the Lake Shore or Queensway as alternatives.
But the Gardiner closure won’t be the only one you’ll be facing in town. The annual Sporting Life 10K run will tie up a section of the downtown core for a few hours on Sunday. At least 9,000 people will be dashing for a good cause, leaving the following roads off limits starting at 8am and lasting several hours until the race is done.
(Full closures unless otherwise noted)
- Yonge to Richmond St., with a single lane open on the latter venue for emergency vehicles only.
- Richmond to Peter St.
- Peter to Blue Jays Way
- Front St., westbound two lanes, north side to Bathurst St.
- Bathurst to Fort York Blvd.
