Yes, it’s May – but there was still a frost warning issued on Sunday night.
But it didn’t last long.
By Monday morning, Environment Canada lifted the alert that had covered much of the province, including the GTA.
Toronto as well as Halton, Peel, York and Durham regions were all cautioned that putting in their spring plants – a traditional long weekend activity – might be better saved for another day.
“I think people are worried the frost is going to come. They don’t want to buy their plants yet,” noted Jenny Shaw of Bill’s Garden Centre. “Next week will be the real May 24 weekend.”
Those who ventured out for some nighttime entertainment – the annual fireworks – brought blankets to ward off the chill.
It seemed green thumbs weren’t the only ones scared off by falling temperatures. Police reported lighter than usual traffic on Highway 400, the main route up to cottage country.
“Friday was very light. We weren’t getting the bumper to bumper style traffic we usually see on the long weekend,” revealed OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford.
It’s all because of a large bubble of Arctic high pressure that settled over the Great Lakes on Sunday night.
The clear skies and light winds were unfortunately ideal conditions for frost, with ground temperatures at or near zero.
By the time the frost alert was lifted on Monday morning, the mercury had climbed, but not that far: we were sitting at 2C in Toronto.
The rest of your Victoria Day will get a little bit warmer, with a high of 16C, and it will stay sunny.
Closer to Lake Ontario, it will feel like 12C.
