New On DVD – June 30, 2009

Eastbound & Down: The Complete First Season CityNews.ca Pick of the Week – Rude, vulgar, offensive and funny as hell. The latest comedy from HBO (which does not currently air on HBO Canada), Eastbound & Down was created by director Jody Hill ( Observe & Report, The Foot Fist Way) and follows former Major League Baseball superstar Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) as he falls from the limelight and returns to his hometown. With only six, 30-min episodes in the first season it’s a great watch in one sitting. With each episode I found the show getting funnier too (thanks to McBride and his over-the-top portrayal of Powers). Special features include outtakes, deleted scenes and more. Show **** out of 5 stars. DVD *** out of 5 stars.

Stone of Destiny – A true story about a group of Scots who attempt to steal The Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey in order to reawaken their country’s pride in the 1950s. Although the film feels like it was made for TV, it’s still a pretty fun flick (especially for those of Scottish heritage). The cast (Charlie Cox, Robert Carlyle, Kate Mara and Billy Boyd) really help the film move along too. Check out the CityNews.ca piece we did with Charlie Cox and director Charles Martin Smith at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Film: ** out of 5 stars. DVD: ** out of 5 stars.

Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience (Blu-ray) – I am by no means a fan of the Jonas Brothers. I’m not even close to the demographic (which I believe is 14-year-old girls). So when I got the 3D Concert Experience on Blu-ray, I laughed out loud (LOL’d for the young readers). How does a person who can’t stand the music review the DVD? Short answer – you don’t. I checked it out though (on mute) to see how the 3D looked on my 34-inch LCD. Impressive and cool (and only available on the Blu-ray release). The 3-Disc Deluxe Edition set is packed with special features and bonus material and I’m sure true fans will get a lot more out of this title than I did. If you want my copy, post a link to this story on Twitter and tag @CityNews. I’ll randomly pick a winner on Wednesday, July 1. More info on the Blu-ray and regular DVD release can be found on the  Disney website. Film: N/A Blu-ray: **** out of 5 stars.
