OTTAWA – The Canadian tourism industry is reeling from the sudden announcement that Mexican travellers will now require a visa to enter the country.
The decision, announced Monday, also applies to citizens of the Czech Republic.
A group of businessmen from the tourism industry said the decision will be felt deeply across the sector, affecting revenues and employment.
Mexico has been the fourth-largest source of overnight tourists to Canada so far this year.
But it was also the No. 1 source of refugee applications, hence the visa requirement.
The government of the Czech Republic recalled their ambassador in protest, and will require visas from Canadian travellers in response.
