Mississauga Gas Fire Forces Mall Evacuation

Enbridge employees sparked a gas fire after severing an underground line while working near Winston Churchill and Derry Road in Mississauga Wednesday.

Apparently, a backhoe operator dug a bit too deep, and the gas ignited, blowing out a column of flame like a blow-torch.

That prompted the evacuation of a nearby mall.

“We were dispatched to this call….it came in as a reported explosion and fire,” explained Acting Deputy Fire Chief, Kevin Duffy.  “We knew it to be an Enbridge facility so the quantity of natural gas wasn’t known at the time.  Typically what you have to do is try to isolate the gas flow…we were able to do that, get the gas flow shut off.  There was one very small mall that we were able to evacuate and make sure the fire didn’t spread to that mall.”

“We don’t know exactly what happened, they were working on exposed gas lines and something happened, they will have to determine what happened exactly.”

No injuries were reported and the fire has been extinguished.
