Tow-Truck Driver Killed After Stepping Out Of His Vehicle

A 50-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon after being pinned under a cube van after stepping out of his truck.

It happened at Weston Road and Fenmar Drive, just north of Finch Avenue West.

Witnesses say the victim, a tow truck driver, pulled over to the side of the road, got out of his vehicle and appeared to be checking something in the back.

An approaching cube van ran into the back of the stopped vehicle, and somehow the victim wound up underneath the cube van.

Emergency crews worked frantically to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“[If] they weren’t paying attention whether it’s interior distraction, exterior or just driving by complacently in the area – we shouldn’t be hitting stopped vehicles,” noted Hugh Smith of Toronto Police.

“And if a vehicle has to stop, the driver was where he should be – over on the side of the road.”

The day’s drizzle made the roads slick and there’s talk the suspect might have been on a cellphone when it happened.

The cube van driver was arrested at the scene but Traffic Services is still investigating possible charges.
