A 25-year-old man is in custody after he allegedly stabbed another man to death in the kitchen of an Annex restaurant on Saturday night.
It happened just after 11pm at New Generation Sushi Restaurant on Bloor Street West near Brunswick Avenue.
A fight broke out between the two employees at the front of the restaurant. They took it to the back, at which point police say one man attacked the other with a sharp object.
Emergency crews rushed the victim to St. Michael’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The victim and the accused, Xu Wang, are both from China. One arrived in 2003, the other about five years later. They’re both in the city on student visas.
This is the third murder in the neighbourhood and the second on that block in the last several months.
Just last week, 67-year-old Gerald Robert Brown was murdered in his Bedford Road apartment.
And 23-year-old Sebastian Herrera was killed in July outside the Brunswick House, a few doors down from New Generation. He had been shot in the stomach during an apparent robbery.
“I’ll still eat there,” resident Kristen McGregor said of New Generation. “It’s a great place. My heart just goes out to them, you know? It’s just so senseless.”
Police are not releasing the victim’s name until they notify next of kin in China.
An autopsy will be performed on Monday.
