Work on the subway extension from Downsview to Vaughan officially underway

It’s the $14-million project that will extend the Spadina subway line all the way through York University into Vaughan.

And Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, Provincial Transportation Minister Jim Bradley and Toronto Mayor David Miller were all on hand to help dig as work started.

The subway extension will run 8.6 km north from Downsview station and will end at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, which Mayor Linda Jackson said will become the city’s cultural and business hub.

“It’s an exciting day.  It’s going to be a wonderful community.  And having the subway terminating in the City of Vaughan is a great big start to a new downtown core.”

Miller added by extending the subway, 30 million car rides will be cut a year in Toronto and York Region.

“Everywhere in the Toronto region that you have excellent rapid transit, people get out of their cars and people will choose it,” he explained.

Six new subway stops will be built, including one at York University.

The tunnel digging is slated to begin late next year.

The extended stops should be open to the public by 2015.
