Shooting In North York High Rise Kills One, Injures Three

Police searched a Christmas tree lot at a Jane Street plaza overnight looking for evidence in a shooting that killed 19-year-old Aeon Grant and injured three others.

The deadly gunfire erupted just before midnight Thursday in a stairwell of a high rise building at 30 Falstaff Ave., near Jane Street and Highway 401. Grant was shot in the head, police said, marking the city’s 55th murder of the year. The three other victims, including two 17-year-old boys, are listed in serious condition in hospital.

“It’s frightening. It’s scary, you know? What is next?” a resident of the high rise said on Friday.

“We need to do better to protect our children around here,” a women who lives in the neighbourhood added.

When police arrived at the building they found Grant in a 15th-floor stairwell. Two other victims were discovered outside a nearby plaza where they’d collapsed, and the fourth victim managed to make his own way to hospital with a bullet wound to the chest.

“There’s a great deal of evidence in the hallway with regards to a number of shots being fired,” Sgt. Gary Giroux of Toronto Police outlined.

“I’ve got approximately three forensic identification teams that are here processing the scene,” he added.

Detectives combed the area around the shopping centre, including a Christmas tree lot, to turn up some evidence, possibly a gun. They’re also doing a door-to-door canvass at the scene of the crime.

Three people are in custody, but there’s no word on charges.
