Carlton Cinema Closes Its Doors Sunday

It’s a sad day for film lovers in Toronto. When the final few customers file out of the Carlton cinema around midnight on Sunday, the theatre will close its doors for good.

Opened in 1981, the theatre became known for showing Canadian, foreign and independent films that had already screened – albeit briefly – at regular cinemas.

An earlier reincarnation sat for 25 years at Yonge and Carlton streets, just west of the theatre’s current location, until it was demolished in 1973.

Now outdated among the state-of-the-art, stadium-seating colossi, the Carlton had a devoted following among audiences who longed for more than the latest vampire flick.

But, owner Cineplex Odeon decided to let the lease expire and not update the facility.

Many say another art-house standby, the Cumberland in Yorkville, may be next.

The Carlton’s last film, Inside Hana’s Suitcase, screens at 10pm Sunday.
