Donations Down At Daily Bread Food Bank

It’s a time of year when many of us are blessed with abundance: too much food, too many relatives to visit, too many people on our gift list.

The Daily Bread Food Bank is facing a much different problem: donations have fallen dramatically compared to last year, and the centre is far from its 2009 goals.

They’ve collected 125,000 kilograms of food – which sounds like a lot, but it’s barely a quarter of their goal.

Daily Bread had hoped to receive 450,000 kg by the time their holiday drive ends on January 4.

“I think there’s a lot of people who are suffering themselves, people who would normally give to Daily Bread, who have either lost their job or had their hours cut,” executive director Gail Nyberg said on Tuesday.

“Although we hear the recession is over, it’s really about jobs and those new jobs aren’t there yet.”

On Friday morning, CityNews and Breakfast Television will be holding our annual Spirit of the Season food drive – and we need your help.

“It’s a big party! Santa’s there, we’ve got cookies, we’ve got food, we’ve got prizes,” beamed Kevin Frankish.

The star-studded event will be held at the Sheraton Centre and for every donation to Daily Bread, you’ll get a chance to win a Nissan Cube.
