Fall report cards eliminated in Ontario

Ontario is about to become the first province in the country to get rid of the fall report card for elementary students.

Instead, the province is suggesting a formal progress report be given before parent-teacher interviews.

The change is part of an overhaul of the marking system after some teachers’ unions complained the fall report card comes too early in the school year to be useful.

The group, People for Education, worries dropping the fall report card won’t give parents the early warning they need to ensure their child is keeping up.

The Toronto Public School Board is also revising report card language and urging teachers to write comments that are more easily understood.
