Woman Struck And Killed By Vehicle While Walking Baby In Stroller

A 28-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a car while she walked her 12-week-old baby son in a stroller on Tuesday.  The infant luckily wasn’t injured.

The tragedy occurred at the intersection of Martin Grove and Eglinton just after 12pm.

The driver, an 83-year-old woman, allegedly ran a red light, but an investigation is ongoing and the extent of charges hasn’t been determined.

“She went through the intersection, striking the mother and part of the stroller, knocking the infant to the ground.  The mother was trapped under the vehicle and shortly after was pronounced dead on the scene,” said P.C. Hugh Smith.

The baby was taken to Sick Kids Hospital as a precaution.

“We are not even sure at this point (what the family situation is), so we’ll be looking into that.  We’ll be taking custody of the child for now,” Smith added earlier in the day.

The father has since been located and the child has been turned over to him.

There are unconfirmed reports that the mother may have pushed the stroller out of the way at the last moment, likely saving the baby’s life, but police wouldn’t comment on that theory.

Witnesses to the event were understandably shaken.

“I saw the stroller on the ground with the baby just outside of it, and I took the baby and made sure the baby was okay, and the baby was okay, he was crying,” said Chris Stanfied.

Police were also dealing with another pedestrian fatality at Keele and Rutherford.

Seventeen-year-old Steven Seixeiro was was struck and killed by a transport truck while he was on his way to school.

The 29-year-old trucker from Brantford was turning right from Rutherford onto Keele when the boy was struck.

Police are still investigating.
