Ice Time May Soon Be Regulated By The City

A City of Toronto committee is considering a proposal that would place the responsibility of equitable ice time on the municipality’s shoulders.
Parks and Recreation officials have suggested the City create a central agency that would delegate ice time between girls’ and boys’ teams at its 48 arenas.
A review was launched after the Leaside Girls Hockey Association said its members weren’t getting a fair shake.
The boards that oversee the arenas, however, are worried a new system would be bogged down in bureaucracy.
They fear this will destroy the community feel of the arenas, create unnecessary costs and destroy leagues. They say there is already as much as 500 prime time hours going unused every week.
If the committee passes the plan, it would still need to get the green light from City council.
