Canada Wins Gold In Men’s Skeleton

Canadian Jon Montgomery slid his way to a gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics on Friday.

The 30-year-old from Russell, Man., overcame powerhouse Latvian Martins Dukurs on his final run to secure Canada’s second straight men’s Olympic skeleton gold. Duff Gibson won four years ago in Turin, Italy.

Montgomery came second to Dukurs in the first run and then won the next three to finish with a combined time of three minutes 29.73 seconds.

Dukurs had to settle for silver in 3:29.80 ahead of Russian Alexander Tretyakov, who finished in 3:30.75.

The result salvaged the night for the Canadian skeleton team after women’s favourite Mellisa Hollingsworth finished a disappointing fifth.

Montgomery is at home on the Whistler Sliding Centre track, winning a test event there a year ago.

Calgary’s Jeff Pain, silver medalist in Turin, was ninth.
