Police Arrest Second Suspect In Hospital Theft

Officers have arrested a second man wanted in the alleged theft of jewelry from a dying patient at East York General Hospital.

Marcos Marinoni, 26, (pictured) failed to turn himself in on Friday after arranging a time with police. But he was taken into custody around 5pm on Saturday.

On Tuesday evening, Marinoni and 29-year-old Isaac Lewkowicz allegedly stole $7,000 worth of jewelry from Edna Davis, an 83-year-old woman who lay unconscious and dying in her hospital bed. Her family, including her husband, George, had left the room briefly to buy a coffee.

”Who would do that to somebody? Oh my God, it’s terrible. They [did] it, and no more than 20 minutes later there I am holding her hand as she dies. It’s a terrible thing, terrible thing. I shall never forget,” he said.

Police say the pair may be responsible for similar robberies, which have been taking place at GTA hospitals for months. The thieves have been targeting maternity wards and palliative care patients.

Lewkowicz was arrested on Wednesday on theft, conspiracy, drug and probation-related offences.

Marinoni faces several charges as well and is scheduled to appear in court on Sunday.
