Cameron Bright Takes A Bite Out Of ‘New Moon’

You might recognize Cameron Bright as the young boy Nicole Kidman believes is her husband reincarnated in the provocative 2004 film Birth. Or you might remember him as Jimmy (aka Leech) in X-Men: The Last Stand. You may have even pointed him out in small roles in Juno, Thank You For Smoking, or Ultraviolent. But even if you missed him in all those films, he’s hard to ignore as Alec, one of the vampires making up the Volturi, in The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

“Who doesn’t want to dress up like a vampire? I liked it because it’s the bad guy and when I was growing up I [was into] vampire movies like Blade,” he says about his part.

Bright had seen the first Twilight and although he liked it he admits it wasn’t one of his favourite movies because he’s not the “romantic type.”

“I loved the idea [behind it]. The second one improved on it even better and I can’t wait for the third one because that’s when stuff starts going down.”

Twilight fans are known around the world for the passion they have for the series. Bright says he had heard horror stories about rabid fans from other members of the cast but never had a problem himself.

“I’m in my backyard playing with my dog and there is no one out here taking pictures of me. They’re just people who genuinely care for something. I actually went to Australia and Rome for Twilight conventions to get out and meet the fans and it was pretty cool.”

As for his acting influences it comes from two seasoned stars — Will Smith and Tom Hanks. And not just because they’re great actors but because they live their lives decently.

“A couple of my favourite movies are Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump and Tom Hanks did [those],” he remarks. “And when you look at Will Smith and see him these days in Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness, when to me he’s still the Fresh Prince, and you think about how he’s carried his career…they’re not out there partying at clubs, making fools of themselves. They’re just doing a job and that’s that. That’s why I like them.”

Surprisingly, one director Bright would like to work with is Rob Zombie, not because he’s into horror but because, “It would be crazy and that’s why I’d love to do it.”

Although the part of Alec in New Moon was small, it did put him in the same scene as Dakota Fanning and Michael Sheen, who also play members of the Volturi. In the upcoming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Bright says his role is a little bigger. He’ll also be back in the last film in the series, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, in 2011.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. Check out a featurette on the Volturi below.
