TTC Plans To Offer Electronic Payment

Fumbling for tickets and tokens could be a thing of the past for many riders if the TTC succeeds in its plan to offer electronic payment.

The “open payment” system – which will be the subject of a public information system Thursday – would allow customers to use credit and debit cards or cell phones at the turnstile or fare box.

“By using the same technology as every bank, business and retailer, transit operators can be assured that their fare systems will have the highest level of security and will never be obsolete,” TTC Chair Adam Giambrone writes on the session’s Facebook event page.

“Visitors from across Canada and around the world will be able to tap and go without having to figure out how to buy a fare.”

If adopted, it would work side by side with the Presto prepaid farecard, which has already been approved for use at 12 subway stations by winter 2011. The TTC brass does not yet know whether it will implement the card throughout the system.

“Electronic Fare Payments and the TTC: Lessons from New York” takes place on Thursday from 6:30 – 9:30pm at City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, 2nd floor, Committee Room 1.
