Campbell: HST is a done deal

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Anti-HST campaigners say their drive against the Harmonized Sales Tax is gaining strength, but as far as the Premier is concerned the tax is a done deal. The government isn’t backing down from plans to introduce it on Canada Day.
Premier Gordon Campbell says it doesn’t matter how many signatures the “No” forces gather. “The HST has been done. We are moving forward with it. The issues that we’re dealing with in the Parliament right now, or the Legislature today are, should we eliminate the PST, and we’re saying yes we should eliminate the PST.”
Campbell says if you’re against the HST, you’re against economic development in B.C., and he says it’s very important for generating jobs in the province.
Campbell is reacting to news that the anti-HST campaign has reached 10 per cent support in Nanaimo. It needs to do that in the 84 remaining provincial ridings by July 5th to get the government to re-think the tax. Former Premier Bill Vander Zalm now has his eye on several constituencies (Fort St. John, Dawson Creek and Cranbrook) which border Alberta. “We expect there are some there that are also complete if not certainly very close. There’s no problem getting signatures. Everybody wants to sign.”
