TORONTO, Ont. – Members of Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee vote Tuesday on plans to turn over two lanes of University Avenue to cyclists.
The National Post reported this is turning into an election issue.
Mayoralty candidate Rocco Rossi wants Mayor David Miller to halt all bike lanes, while rival George Smitherman also wants a time out on more bike lanes.
Deputy mayor Joe Pantalone called the battle between cars and bikes a “phony war.”
Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti wants to impose a bicycle registration tax, while Councillor Rob Ford is worried the University Avenue bike lanes could hamper access to hospitals.
