Baltovich Suing For $13 Million In Wrongful Conviction

A man convicted of killing his girlfriend in 1992 and acquitted in 2008 is suing the province.
Robert Baltovich, 44, says he was wrongfully convicted in the death of Elizabeth Bain. He is now suing Ontario’s attorney general, two Toronto police officers and his former lawyers for $13 million.
Baltovich spent eight years in jail following his second-degree murder conviction. Bain disappeared in June of 1990 and her body has never been found.
“He didn’t deserve to go to jail for eight years for a crime he didn’t commit,” lawyer Harvey Strosberg told CityNews.
“What he’s entitled to do is to go to court. We believe that the justice system will, at the end of the day, award him compensation,” Strosberg added.
He was released from prison in 2000 on bail and the Ontario Court of Appeal agreed to hear his case in 2004.
On the first day of the retrial, the Crown announced it would not present any evidence.
Lawyers for Baltovich speculated that notorious serial killer Paul Bernardo may have been responsible. However, Bernardo has denied any involvement in Bain’s death.
