Elderly Man Robbed On Bloor Danforth Subway

An elderly man was allegedly robbed on the Bloor-Danforth subway line on Saturday evening.

Two men allegedly approached Yusuf Hizel, 79, and asked for change. When he said he didn’t have any, the pair stole his wallet and glasses.

It happened around 8:30pm between Chester and Pape stations.

“They just grabbed me and took my wallet out from my pocket,” Hizel told CityNews.

“I screamed to the passengers but they ignored it. The train was almost half full,” he added.

Hizel couldn’t reach the panic alarm strip and no one on board the train answered his call for help. His nose was cut during the attack.

“It surprises me that this does not happen more often,” TTC rider George Vavoulis said on Monday.

“You go on the subway after a certain hour and you’re almost scared to go there. You don’t feel safe,” he added.

Police later recovered the victim’s missing items. His cash was gone but the credit cards were still there. While investigators believe they have a good image of the suspects, officers could have been waiting for the culprits at Chester Station if someone had pulled the alarm or called 911.

The two suspects are described as:

  • black
  • 20
  • 5’8″
  • wearing all black
  • There was a design or writing on the chest of one or both suspects’ jackets

A TTC collector was allegedly robbed at Leslie Station that same night.
