Trinity Bellwoods Park Designated Protest Zone For G20 Summit

One of the city’s most popular parks is slated to become centre stage for protesters during the G20 Summit this summer.

As international leaders gather at the Metro Convention Centre June 26 and 27th, authorities are hoping the vast majority of protesters will gather two kilometres away at Trinity Bellwoods Park, a green space well out of the summit’s downtown security zone.

A large march starting at Queen’s Park and ending at Trinity Bellwoods is already planned for the Saturday of the summit. That demonstration will include the Ontario Federation of Labour, Greenpeace and Oxfam Canada, according to a published report.

While security officials are hoping the majority of law-abiding protesters will use the park as the staging ground for demonstrations, protesters are expected to populate the areas immediately outside the so-called yellow zone, bound by Spadina to the west, Yonge to the east and Queen Street West to the north.

A three-metre high fence is expected to be erected around the high security red zone directly around the convention centre. The exact boundaries of that area haven’t yet been revealed.

Reports last week claimed an old movie studio on Eastern Avenue will be used as a temporary jail for people arrested in the security areas.
