VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – From fired-up drivers to passionate cyclists — the great bike lane debate has generated a fair bit of feedback at News1130.com this week. But one nearby city is proving it is possible for drivers and cyclists to get along, even in our part of the world.
Ours isn’t the only city where there is friction between those on bikes and those in cars. Seattle planner Peter Lagerwey says he saw it about six years ago as his city was getting ready to roll out its master cycling plan. “There was some chatter that this was a huge issue. But then things have gone to the voters and they’ve funded a lot of trails and bike facilities. They’ve always passed overwhelmingly.”
Lagerwey says addressing the attention requires defining where drivers and cyclists should be on the road. He says it takes educating both about the rules and then enforcing them.
Tonight, Vancouver City Council is expected to move ahead with part one of its cycling master plan.
