Child Survives Libyan Plane Crash

One child survived after a plane crashed as it came in for a landing at a Libyan airport Wednesday, killing at least 96 others on board.

The Dutch boy, said to be eight-years-old, is reportedly the only known survivor of the crash near Tripoli, but there’s no word yet on his condition.

The Afriqiyah Airways Airbus A330-200, arriving from Johannesburg, South Africa, was carrying 104 people, including 93 passengers and 11 crew members, when it crashed around 6am (local time). The fate of seven other passengers is still unknown.

More than half of the passengers on board were from the Netherlands, according to the Dutch tourism board.

A team of French investigators headed to the scene Wednesday. Weather conditions were good when the crash happened and there were only mild winds. The airline doesn’t have a record of safety problems.

Afriqiyah Airways is owned by the Libyan government.
