Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he opposes any new abortion law for Canada.
His statement comes as the issue continues to bubble and backbench Conservatives press for new legislation.
Asked today about a Conservative backbencher’s bill on abortion, Harper said he normally doesn’t comment on private member’s legislation.
But he went on to say he would oppose any attempt to create a new abortion law.
Harper’s comment comes amid controversy over Ottawa’s refusal to put abortion on the G8 agenda, and Quebec’s demand that he clarify his government’s position.
Canada’s abortion law was struck down by the Supreme Court in 1988 and since that era, no government has dared reopen the politically explosive debate.
