With the summer tourism season and the G20 summit just around the corner, a strike by hotel workers would be a crippling obstacle for the city of Toronto, but it could become a reality after 94% of hotel employees voted in favour of giving their union, Unite Here Local 75, a mandate to call a strike.
Workers at 32 Toronto hotels have threatened to walk off the job if negotiations with management break down. Their contract expired in February.
Strike action could commence on June 24, according to Paul Clifford, Unite Here Local 75 president.
Clifford added that the Union doesn’t want to interfere with the G20 Summit, but media and the French trade delegation are planning to stay at a hotel, the Novotel on the Esplanade, that could be affected.
Support for strike action doesn’t necessarily mean a strike will take placed however.
