HST Rebate Cheques In The Mail

More than six million people across the province will soon be receiving a cheque meant to soothe the initial blow of the upcoming harmonized sales tax.
Revenue Canada began mailing the transition cheques out this week. The HST takes effect July 1 and will apply to a wide range of goods and services previously exempt from provincial sales tax (PST).
The 13 per cent HST combines the eight per cent PST and five per cent GST.

Premier Dalton McGuinty says his government is handing over $4 billion to taxpayers to help ease the burden of the new tax. Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak claims handing out transition cheques is simply a means of bribing taxpayers with their own cash.
Couple with a combined income under $160,000 are eligible for a rebate up to $1,000 split over three payments. Singles earning less than $80,000 can get up to $300.
