A man convicted in a so-called “honour killing” was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years Wednesday.
Kamikar Singh Dhillon, 48, stabbed his daughter-in-law, Amandeep Kaur Dhillon, 22, to death inside the family’s grocery store on Airport Rd on New Year’s Day 2009.
Throughout his police interviews Dhillon maintained he was justified in killing his daughter-in-law because he thought she was going to leave his son for another man and disgrace the family.
There was no evidence Amandeep was having an affair. In 2005, her parents in Punjab paid a large dowry for the marriage to the stranger, with the expectation she would bring them to Canada.
Amandeep’s three-year old son is now in India, being cared for by her parents.
