Leafs at bottom of the championship pile after Chicago’s win

TORONTO, Ont. – It’s party time in Chicago after the Blackhawks defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4 to 3 in overtime, to capture their first Stanley Cup in 49 years.
This means the Toronto Maple Leafs now have the distinction of being the team that has gone the longest without winning Lord Stanley’s prize.
“Yea, I mean, it’s like being in school when you get in trouble all the time, you go, ‘yea, but Billy, he’s even worse right? But, Billy’s gone, he’s switched schools, we’re the worst now’,” former Leafs general manager and FAN 590 morning host Gord Stellick told 680News.
Chicago went 49 years without a Stanley Cup, while the Leafs have been without a Stanley Cup since 1967.
On Twitter, some fans are suggesting next year could be the one for Toronto, but Stellick said that’s not so realistic.
“Right now we’re dreaming, we don’t have a first-round pick, I mean, that’s a lot of first-round picks you see in Chicago [that’s] making the difference. It’s a process,” he said.
Stellick said Toronto has been six years out of the playoffs, but suggested this could be just what the team needs to finally step it up.
