Novotel Workers Appear Ready To Strike Thursday

With just days to go before the G20 takes over the downtown core workers at a large hotel near the foot of Yonge Street appear ready to hit the picket line.
The French trade delegation taking part in this week’s summit plans to stay at the Hotel Novotel on the Esplanade but about 80 employees there could be on the picket line starting at 6am Thursday after contract negotiations broke down late Tuesday.
The hotel is owned by French company Accor, which runs a number of chains, including Motel 6.
“I’ve never seen so-called bargaining like this,” Paul Clifford, President of UNITE HERE Local 75, said in a statement Wednesday. “Accor is putting the Novotel’s piece of the G20 in jeopardy. The responsibility for this dispute belongs one hundred percent to Accor.”
