NEWMARKET, Ont. – The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) York Region branch cancelled an adoption blitz that was planned for Saturday.
The announcement of the adoption blitz resulted in a stream of threats against staff, OSPCA reported.
A small, extremely aggressive group of protesters, threatened the staff and the facility on Woodbine Avenue in Newmarket.
For the first time, threats were made against members of the public for attempting to participate in the adoption of the animals.
The animals up for adoption have been transported to sites across the province. For safety reasons, the OSPCA cannot disclose the location of the new adoption sites.
The York Region shelter remains closed. They will announce a re-opening date in the coming weeks.
York Region’s OSPCA shelter became the site of daily protests last month when it announced the euthanization of over 300 animals after a ringworm outbreak.
