Toronto protesters grab international headlines

TORONTO, Ont. – If protesters wanted the world’s attention, they got it.
Publications like the New York Times showcased an overturned Toronto after spending millions to prepare for an economic summit.
The paper let their readers know the Toronto Blue Jays were moved to Philadelphia after congestion concerns for a three-game series against the Phillies, and that popular theatre and concerts were cancelled like Dutch violinist Andre Rieu, who was scheduled to perform at the Air Canada Centre Saturday night.
It wasn’t just the cancellations the New York Times focused on, though. They also pointed out the tax payers’ security bill after the summit is over; a bill shy of $1-billion, the approximate cost of waging a war for a year in Afghanistan.
But while the U.S. highlighted Ontario’s costly G8/G20 summits, the British tabloids; however, focused the violence on the streets of Toronto Saturday night.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he will spend about a tenth of what Canada did when he hosts the next G8 meeting in the French Riviera next summer.
