Canada’s Population Tops 34 Million

Canada’s population topped 34 million on April 1, Statistics-Canada revealed on Monday.

And much of that growth has been fueled by immigration. In fact, two-thirds of that increase – 88,000 more people since January 1 – is due to net international migration.

The rest was attributed to “natural” increases and much of that came from the west: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba all had growth rates stronger than the national average.

The official federal population estimate is 34, 019, 000.

However, the overall increase in the population was smaller than during the same period in 2009. Statistics Canada said that natural increase and net international migration rose at a slower pace this year.
