TORONTO, Ont. – A provincial investigation into surgical errors and the quality of pathology at three hospitals in and around Windsor is going to take longer than originally expected, according to the ministry of health.
In March, the government appointed Dr. Barry McLellan to lead the probe, originally said to be completed by the end of June.
So far, more than 6,000 pathology cases and 130 surgical errors have been looked into, but due to the volume of work and the scope of the analysis, health minister Deb Matthews granted a request from McLellan to extend the deadline by a month – to the end of July.
McLellan stated that he wants to stand by his standings with certainty.
The investigation began after two women underwent unnecessary mastectomies at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital.
