Power Restored After Massive Blackout

Power has been restored to a quarter of a million people who were without electricity on a sweltering day in Toronto.

The outage started with an explosion Monday afternoon at a transformer station located at Kipling and Norseman, just north of the Queensway, Hydro One confirmed. The blast happened at 4:42pm and affected 250,00 customers, especially in the city’s west and south ends.

An investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing.

As of 8pm, Hydro One said only about 3,000 were left without power.  By 9:30pm, they announced that power at all homes and businesses was restored.

To help citizens cope during the blackout, the City of Toronto opened numerous cooling stations.

The City’s extended hour pool program is also in effect and seven outdoor pools will remain open this evening until 11:45 p.m.

    • Monarch Park Pool, 115 Felstead Ave.
    • Regent Park Pool, 450 Gerrard St. E.
    • Alex Duff Memorial Pool, 779 Crawford Ave.
