Deadly summer in the water already

Summer is just two weeks old and already over 12 people have drowned in Ontario’s waterways and pools.

We should all know how to swim at an early age. Those skills can save your life, Barbra Beyer with the Life Saving Society told 680News.

“It’s like learning to ride a bike or learning to ski, once you know, you know,” she said.

So far this summer, just about every drowning victim was either a man or a boy.

Males are actually more likely to go under because they take bigger risks with boating and water sports and are less likely to wear life jackets.

Immigrants also have a high drowning risk because they may come from a country with very few bodies of water where swimming is not a popular activity.
