Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Dead At 80

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning in a Tampa, Fla. hospital after reportedly suffering a massive heart attack.

A spokesman confirmed Steinbrenner, also known as “the Boss”, passed away around 6:30am. The baseball mogul turned 80 on July 4. Steinbrenner died just two days after the Yankees’ public address announcer Bob Sheppard passed away.

Due to his declining health over the past few years, Steinbrenner put his sons Hal and Hank in charge of the family business.

Under his often controversial direction, the Yankees won seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants since 1973. He clashed with Yankee’s catcher and manager Yogi Berra often.

While he didn’t balk at shelling out millions to acquire players such as Derek Jeter, Reggie Jackson, Alex Rodriquez and Joe Torre in his quests for championships, Steinbrenner also gave millions to charity on the condition no one was told who made the donations.
